After observing an experienced teacher working with pupils with EAL…

Watch how I’m working with them. See how I talk with them, notice my tone of voice, the gestures, the flow. See how I avoid a fuss where none needs to be, letting one boy move centre stage, acknowledging his keenness, now alert to how to use him to show everyone what is happening. See how everything links together, how the purpose is communicated with every movement, how I talk with this boy, how I ask that girl what she sees, how I point out and show, and suggest. How I screw up my face to suggest disapproval, or being unsure, and how I move this boys’ hands away from the ruler, quietly mentioning his next job, coming soon. See how I say the sentences, say the words, let them sound lovely and bright in my mouth, making this investigation live, letting pupils see what they can do.
